Liken Type Rash
by James A. Ferrel M.D., CNC

Question:
Do you know much about “Liken” type rashes that effect limbs and seem to not want to go away? The rash was experienced about 8 years ago and eventfully went away but has recurred. It looks like mosquito bites that just form a bit of a crusty like scab, break off and form a sore. I’m also a certified nutritional consultant and wonder if you have nutritional advice for the client so affected?
Answer:
It’s a shame I can’t see these lesions with you, because with skin lesions ‘one look may be worth a thousand words’. However, what you are describing sounds like it falls within the category of papulosquamous lesions. The fact that it occurs in non-coalescing small scabby lesions, and has gone away only to return, narrows the field somewhat. Neuro dermatitis is quite common, and most often resolves along with the cerebral conflicts that causes it. The other 3 common disorders that most likely fit are gutate psoriasis, parapsoriasis guttata, and lichen planus. Dispite their unknown etiologies all are best diagnosed and treated by a dermatologist.
From our perspective, it’s important that we remember that both the gut and skin originate from the same embryological related ectoderm tissue. Their common origins render them affected by common ‘thorns’ (causes). For example, neuro dermatitis is often associated with vague ‘irritable bowel symptoms’. So it also is that many rashes represent allergy to foods. Judicious amounts of natural sunlight exposures will most often help psoriasis. Other helpful interventions are anti-inflammatory foods (see chapters 8), and glass-contained GLA oils such as borage, evening primrose, or black current seed.
As with any rash it is best not to pick at it so as not to introduce infection.
