Peace of Mind - Your Birth Right
May 15,2006 12:00 by Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD

The concept of Peace of Mind, a birth right, seems elusive within the world—what with wars, higher cost of living, family responsibility and work—many people are on a tight rope. Peace of Mind seems to elude us from kindergarten on. What is a birth right has slipped from our grasp like sand through an hour glass—it simply trickled away. Yet, we plaintively talk about it as if it is a foreign concept or only for the elite—those few who are gurus or highly exceptional people.

Allowing the sands of Peace of Mind to slip away was established long ago and it is insidiously self-defeating. It is simply ubiquitous and has infiltrated every aspect of life—the corporate marketplace, professional sports, interpersonal relationships, and everything else you can name. A person doesn't need to be a guru or a highly exceptional person to earn the right to have Peace of Mind. Peace of Mind is as important as good nutrition, exercise and a spiritual connection.

So, how does one create Peace of Mind? It is quite simple, yet difficult because the choices we make either lead us away from or toward Peace of Mind. You need to:

1. Accept I deserve Peace of Mind.
2. Believe I can create Peace of Mind, in spite of what is being created out there.
3. Develop a plan to create Peace of Mind
4. Implement the plan
5. Accept that some people won’t agree with my needs which create my Peace of Mind.

Let’s take a look. A few questions answer this mystery if you will dare answer them as honestly as you know how:

• Am I in any unhealthy relationships—siblings, partner, parent(s), colleagues, friends?
• Am I willing to change or terminate unhealthy relationships—including finding a new job?
• Am I taking good care of myself emotionally, nutritionally, spiritually?
• Do I exercise to be physically healthy?
• Have I cleared out emotional baggage?
• Do I champion myself everyday for being me?
• Am I assertive—stating my needs, wants and limitations?
• What is in my present thoughts, compelling me to revisit shadowy scenes and relive the suffering stored in them?
• Am I willing to do what it takes to create my Peace of Mind?
• Am I willing to forgive others to create my Peace of Mind?
• Am I willing to say, ‘NO,’ when NO is the best response for me?

If you answered, ‘YES,’ to all these questions you are highly motivated to create Peace of Mind. The next question is: When will you begin your journey of creating Peace of Mind? The perfect time to start is NOW—Yes, right NOW—this minute. Choose one thing you can do right NOW and do it. You are on your way to creating Peace of Mind. The key then is to continue doing things every day for the rest of your life to continue creating Peace of Mind. No one can create it for you. You can not create Peace of Mind for anyone nor can anyone create it for you.

If you answered, ‘NO’ to questions above, except the first one you can begin your journey on those items you are willing to do. As you change those things you are willing to change now, you will notice the ones you initially weren’t willing to change seem less difficult. Rome wasn’t built in a day—it takes time to create something new—Peace of Mind.
