Move Forward To Understand And Embrace Neogenesis - Part 4

Continued... New ‘out of the box’ thinking that recognizes the role of the toxic environment and accepts the supremacy of the body’s design program to heal itself seems refreshing honest and timely. Mishio Kushi - the founder of Macrobiotics - said, "Everything that has a front, has a back." The back is the health crisis chasing us. The front is that supreme body design program that allows us to heal-- Neogenesis – the upside, the truly promising side of this particular reality. In the early 1960s Thomas Kuhn (1922-1996) wrote a ground-breaking book, “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions” in which he showed that science does not progress in an orderly fashion from lesser to greater truth, but rather remains fixated on a particular dogma or explanation – a paradigm – which is only overthrown with great difficulty when a new paradigm is established. It is now evident with the polarization of the health care industry and the all-too-common feeling of discontentment of many patients left so poorly served that the elements demanding change are in place. My goal is to assist in establishing a new, more substantive paradigm with regard to our health and well-being; that paradigm is based upon prevention and a more pristine regeneration of our self --Neogenesis. The word ‘paradigm’, by the way, first appeared in English in the fifteenth century and was defined as ‘an example or pattern.’ The definition hasn’t changed. The patterns within the medical world have changed, though. The medical paradigm currently in place is not a forward movement. It seems bound and tangled in a clumsy balancing attempt at ‘health maintenance’ while being made awkward and overweight by the ‘new profile change’ challenge. The 2 big players in this scary profile change are the Metabolic Syndrome – a conglomeration unto itself anchored by the apple shape of central obesity – along with the fallout from drug marketing-generated over-diagnosing of illness. The metabolic syndrome classically incorporates and associates 4 elements: Central Obesity, Diabetes Type 2, and the ‘heart-breakers’ of Hypertension and Hyperlipidemia (high blood fats). This drug marketing-inspired over-diagnosis is reflected by ever-expanding medical diagnostic labeling. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DMS-IV), a professional psychiatric volume that self-servingly bends statistics, be they real or creatively construed is the stereotypical reflection of such factitious over-labeling.Other elements of the profile change that are over-burdening the system include greatly perceived increased incidents of mental disorders in the population anchored by Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and a myriad of neuro-psychiatric diseases such as Autism, ADHD, Drug Addiction, Youth Suicide and Youth Crime. Also found are Alzheimer’s, obesity-related and aggravated disorders such as Gastro-Esophageal-Reflux-Disorder (GERD), Gallstones, Weight Bearing Joint Arthritis, and other pain syndromes. Finally, many people seem to be experiencing tissue weakening disorders earlier in life than expected such as Osteoporosis, Diverticulosis, Mitral Valve Prolapse, and Rotator Cuff Tears. Diseases unheard of before or barely on the radar are now becoming common place like: Autism, Fibromyalgia, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Sick Building Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. There’s been a significant shift in the picture of these and other illnesses, and we appear to be lost in comprehending both cause and effect. It is however my argument that they’re all related to two things: body/mind toxicity due to increasingly harmful environmental factors, and the spurious conclusions drawn by drug companies who aim for high profits and in this regard are experiencing enormous success. In epidemiology, an epidemic (from Greek epi- upon demos people) is a disease that appears as new cases in a given human population, during a given period, present at a rate substantially exceeding what is ‘expected,’ based on recent experience, that being the number of new cases in a population during a specified period of time. This phenomenon is called the ‘incidence rate.' To your health and your happiness –James Ferrel M.D This is an excerpt from Dr. Ferrel’s innovative wellness book Neogenesis.
