GALLBLADDER INFLAMMATION - CHOLECYSTITIS

Every year, over a half-million people are admitted into U.S. hospitals for gallbladder disease – Cholecystitis; two thirds of

those patients are treated surgically. In studies of 60-90 year old people, 60% of the women and 30-50% of men were

found to have gallstones. According to the National Institutes of Health pain from gallstones results in about 800,000

hospitalizations and more than 500,000 operations each year in the United States.

Trans-cutaneous removal of the gallbladder is now the most common surgical procedure performed in the United States.

I'd say it's a surgical procedure often performed whether you need it or not. It's a procedure that's become a trend.

Yes, there are 'trends' in the world of medicine. Procedures for various conditions go in and out of fashion, like shoes.

Thankfully, we now feel that ovaries, uteri, tonsils, and the pre-frontal lobes of our brains are best left alone and wonder

why they were overly addressed with a knife in the past. What a sad commentary.

Are there choices that could be made to avoid gallstones in the first place? Remember that old saw, "An ounce of

prevention is worth a pound of cure"? That old saw has stuck around for a long, long time and for good reason. Indeed, I

opine, most cases of gallstones as well as many other gut issues could be avoided with better dietary and lifestyle choices.
