Title: The inhumanity of poverty
Tags: poverty, inhumanity
Blog Entry: One of my most unforgetable experience is my immersion with the poor. It was so life changing that years later i would still wake up crying in the night and remember my holy vow of justice. I cannot forget my stay with a poor family that gave me warmth and love and yes food even when they have nothing to eat. I remember one night when we had a meeting at their place and they said they had already eaten. So we ate up all the rice they cooked to our hearts' content. It was only the next day that we knew that their whole family did not eat that night just so in order to feed us. This kind of love and hospitality and generosity was unthinkable for me. It was so ironic that it would be the poor who would teach me this. I grew up with a nice warm bed, a safe home, and enough food when this poor family only had one egg per week. They would divide this one egg so that all the children would share its richness. We had to fetch water and firewood in a faraway place. Yet in all the hardships, i experienced love and sharing and acceptance. My soul was so seared so that i cannot now accept the terrible injustice of the world where majority are so poor that our waste and trash is actually more than enough to feed them.
