The inhumanity of poverty
Posted On 08/19/2008 22:42:16 by Bodhi

One of my most unforgetable experience is my immersion with the poor. It was so life changing that years later i would still wake up crying in the night and remember my holy vow of justice. I cannot forget my stay with a poor family that gave me warmth and love and yes food even when they have nothing to eat. I remember one night when we had a meeting at their place and they said they had already eaten. So we ate up all the rice they cooked to our hearts' content. It was only the next day that we knew that their whole family did not eat that night just so in order to feed us. This kind of love and hospitality and generosity was unthinkable for me. It was so ironic that it would be the poor who would teach me this. I grew up with a nice warm bed, a safe home, and enough food when this poor family only had one egg per week. They would divide this one egg so that all the children would share its richness. We had to fetch water and firewood in a faraway place. Yet in all the hardships, i experienced love and sharing and acceptance. My soul was so seared so that i cannot now accept the terrible injustice of the world where majority are so poor that our waste and trash is actually more than enough to feed them.

I've met your family in poverty Bodhi; visitors are special, and always require the best that you can give to make them happy. Here in America people do not always understand "poor" because they are not exposed to it. Some people live their whole lives as poor, and they do this with a smile on their faces. Joy can be found in life for every person looking for it. If food is scarce, family and friends can still bring you joy.

But, food is very important to every life on this planet. Here in America we throw food away, and our government tells us to keep throwing food away. Can anybody explain to me why my bag of dried pinto beans has an expiration date on it? After dried beans were found inside of an ancient tomb in South America? Planted to make more beans? Cooked into a surprisingly still good batch of food?

It is totally wrong that our country is taught to throw away food that others would be happy to have if we do not want to use it. Food banks are not allowed to give away outdated food for any reason - not to feed pets that need it, not to compost into a garden, and not to save a human life. Our motto is that if we can't eat the best, we will not eat at all. Which of course makes no sense. Unless you are the people selling the food.

Grrrrr..... Snap! Snap! Snap! I really hate those stupid dates on the bags, boxes, and canned goods. It's a scam.
