Life and Death
Posted On 08/27/2008 20:26:42 by Bodhi

Only those who are truly aware of the finality of their deaths are the ones who truly live. Only then will we not take anything for granted. Only then will we realize the beauty of life. Yet sometimes our society distracts us from things that really matter in life. Sometimes we worry so much about our survival that we forget to really live. Worse is when we are preoccupied so much with making money that we become automatons of money. We become like living human machines with our boring daily routine. So safe and so secure we make of our existence that everything happens as expected and the unexpected has no room in our lives. Chance meetings, discontinuities, coincidences fail to make that subtle touch of the spirit because we become so insensitive and so cold and so preoccupied with what we call our lives. Stephen Donaldson wrote of this in his famous novel: These are pale deaths which men call their lives: for all the scents of green things growing, each breath is but an exhalation of the grave. Bodies jerk like puppet corpses, and hell walks laughing... Thus i am reminded of the song "Hotel California" where you find all the amenities, such a lovely place, plenty of room, where you can check out anytime you like but you can never leave... Its sad and its touching how the modern world has enslaved our souls with commercialism and left our spirits dry. I liken this to Max Weber's scathing criticism of society---where we find ourselves inside the "Golden Iron Cage of Bureaucracy". In the Gospel we read, "What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but suffers the loss of his own soul?"

Money and material things do not make you happy. Sometimes people nee to just be left with only those possesions in order to see it. With money comes power. With power comes war and with war comes death and destruction. This is applies in everyday life. War can be within yourself , family, friends, the Johnsons down the street. Ive never heard of an outcome thats good. These possesions tend to bring out the worst in human nature and greed. The bible quotes " A rich man getting into heaven is like pushing a camel thru the eye of a needle" . Now im not saying everyone who has an abundance of money or possesions wont go to heaven or even that they are a bad person, However i think whenthats all you strive in life for you forget what life really is about. I would rather live like a peasant broke and poor than spend my life making millions . If you have to give up your values and morales to get there is the respect you might think you are getting really worth it. The people you might have hurt to get that power can you look at them ?? i know i coulnt.

Another good one my friend. I enjoy reading your topics. You are very insightful and you put my brain to work and make me check my morales and values. For that i thank you.

It's sooo hard to define between needing to work, and needing not to work, while we are trying to structure happiness into our lives. For some, collecting money seems to become an overwhelming goal - the whole reason for living. Then, they define their self-worth by what their bank account balance is. But, what happens if that bank goes under tomorrow?

Nope. Self-worth can't be attached to material possessions. It doesn't work out well.

I use a head-game thought to keep proper perspectives going on while I work. It finds "me" time every day no matter how busy my schedule is.

Thought: If my world ends tomorrow, am I doing everything that needs to be done today?

Laughing!!! It's really is amazing how fast you can find time to smile with that thought going on. But, hey! It works for me! I need smile time much more than a bank account that'll be sitting here without me someday.

Happy Thoughts to All! Catherine
