If a person is 40% or more overweight, they are twice as prone to premature death as a person of normal weight within 10 to 30 years of initially becoming obese. In particular, abdominal obesity which is evidenced by excessive fat around the stomach and abdomen, is one of the main symptoms Syndrome-X (insulin resistance or pre-diabetes), polycystic ovarian syndrome and cardiovascular disease. In women abdominal obesity is indicated by a waist circumference of 35 or more inches and a body mass index of 0.8. Men are considered to be abdominally obese with a waist circumference of 40 or more inches and a body mass index of 1.0 or greater.
