Dear Friend,
Our campaigns to abolish horse slaughter, stop animal fighting, and end the Canadian seal hunt are all at critical stages. With Congress returning today for its “lame-duck” session, we have just a few days left to push key bills over the finish line to protect horses and dogs. We are so close on both! And Canada’s baby seals received some good and bad news over the past few weeks. On the heels of our historic Election Day victories for farm animals and mourning doves, I want to update you on what is happening right now:
Today is the National Call In Day to stop horse slaughter
Click Here to End the Slaughter of America's Horses.
In 2006 alone, America’s three foreign-owned slaughterhouses have sent more than 100,000 American horses to dinner tables overseas. To end this cruel slaughter, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act on September 7. But the U.S. Senate has just days to pass its version of the bill before it adjourns for the year. Time is running out, and a
Tragic Accident involving a trailer carrying horses to slaughter underscores the need for the Senate to act now.
Today is our National Call-In Day for Horses, and we must flood Senate offices with phone calls, which were instrumental in getting the bill through the House of Representatives and ready for Senate action. Call the Congressional switchboard at (202) 224-3121
Urge Majority Leader John Boehner to end animal fighting
Click Here to Urge the House to Clamp Down on Animal Fighters.
Animal fighters involved in the brutal underground industry of dogfighting and cockfighting often make thousands of dollars in a single night. But when they illegally ship animals for fighting across state lines, a misdemeanor -- essentially a slap on the wrist -- is the only penalty they will possibly face.
The law must change, and the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act would make trafficking in fighting animals a felony, with stiffer penalties. The bill would also make it a crime to move cockfighting implements in interstate or foreign commerce. It's down to the wire for this bill, which passed the Senate unanimously but has been inexplicably bottled up in the House Judiciary Committee by Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI).
Please contact House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and urge him to bring this critical legislation, H.R. 817, to the floor for an up-or-down vote immediately. The bill is supported by the American Veterinary Medical Association, National Sheriffs' Association, and more than 400 state and local law enforcement agencies. It’s also co-sponsored by three quarters of the entire House, making the delay unconscionable. It’s time for the House of Representatives to pass this bill.
Update on Canada's Cruel Seal Hunt
Click Here to help Stop Canada's Massive Seal Hunt.
First, the good news: In a historic move, the European Union recently passed a declaration calling for a ban on all trade in harp and hooded seal products. This is a crucial step toward closing off one of the major markets for the Canadian commercial sealing industry. In addition, more than 330,000 consumers and more than 1,000 restaurants, grocery stores, and other seafood distributors have joined a boycott of Canadian seafood -- a boycott that we hope will show Canadian fishermen that they cannot afford to continue killing baby seals.
Now the bad news: Canada intends to place more restrictions on the legal and peaceful observation of the commercial seal hunt in 2007. The Canadian government knows the horrific images of this hunt are closing markets for Canadian seal products and Canadian seafood around the world -- and that is why it is determined to stop observers from filming the seal hunt. But these cynical attempts to conceal cruelty will fail. If the 2007 seal hunt goes ahead, our ProtectSeals team will be there to show the world what the Canadian government is so desperate to hide. With your help, we will end the barbaric hunt forever.
Thank you for taking action today, and for all you do for animals.
Sincerely,
Wayne Pacelle

In Arizona, humane treatment of farm animals won the day when voters cast their ballot in favor of Proposition 204, which bans gestation crates for breeding pigs and veal crates for young calves. Agribusiness and other special interests spent $2.5 million to defeat Proposition 204. It is the second state in the nation to ban gestation crates and the first state to ban veal crates. The vote was 61 percent in favor and only 39 percent opposed.
Michigan voters stepped up for mourning doves, crushing Proposal 3 on the ballot and restoring the 100-year tradition of protecting the state's official bird of peace from target shooting. The vote was 68 percent to 32 percent. The Humane Society of the United States spearheaded the effort to protect mourning doves, from garnering more than 1,000 endorsements to relentlessly canvassing the state in support of the issue. Michigan voters listened, and the gentle backyard songbird will remain safe from target shooters.
George Bush goes to a primary school to talk to the kids, to get a little boost in his PR. After his talk he offers question time. One
little boy puts up his hand and George asks him his name.
" Stanley," responds the little boy.
"And what is your question, Stanley?"
"I have 5 questions:
First, why did the USA invade Iraq without the support of the UN?
Second, why are you President when Al Gore got more votes?
Third, whatever happened to Osama Bin Laden?"
Fourth, why are we so worried about gay marriage and supporting the rest of the world when 1/2 of all Americans don't have health insurance? Shouldn't our country come first?
Fifth, Why do we borrow money to give to countries that will never pay it back. Can't they borrow it themselves?
Just then, the bell rings for recess. George Bush informs the kiddies that they will continue after recess.
When they resume George says, "OK, where were we? Oh, that's right: question time. Who has a question?"
Another little boy puts up his hand. George points him out and asks him his name.
"Steve," he responds.
"And what is your question, Steve?"
"Actually, I have 7 questions.
First, why did the USA invade Iraq without the support of the UN?
Second, why are you President when Al Gore got more votes?
Third, whatever happened to Osama Bin Laden?
Fourth, why are we so worried about gay marriage and supporting the rest of the world when 1/2 of all Americans don't have health insurance? Shouldn't our country come first?
Fifth, Why do we borrow money to give to countries that will never pay it back. Can't they borrow it themselves?
Sixth, why did the recess bell go off 20 minutes early?
And Seventh, what the heck happened to Stanley?"
Dear Friend,
This election day, I will be voting YES on Proposition 204. I hope you will join me in supporting this important measure to stop animal cruelty.
It's animal abuse to keep pigs or veal calves in tiny crates so small that they can’t even turn around or stretch their limbs. Voting YES on Proposition 204 will stop this intensive confinement on corporate factory farms. It will also protect our environment, food safety, and tradition of family farming.
Proposition 204 is supported by the Arizona Republic, Arizona Humane Society, Sierra Club, and many others. I'm sure you agree that even animals raised for food deserve basic humane treatment. If so, please join me in voting YES on Proposition 204!

Thank You,
Fast-Food Grilled Chicken Contains Dangerous Carcinogen, Laboratory Tests Reveal
Doctors’ Group Sues McDonald’s, Burger King, Outback, and Other National Chains Under California Law to Warn Consumers
WASHINGTON—Every sample of grilled chicken products from seven national restaurant chains tested positive for a dangerous carcinogenic compound called PhIP, prompting the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) to file suit under California’s Proposition 65 to compel the restaurants to warn unsuspecting consumers. PCRM is suing McDonald’s, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Chili’s, Applebee’s, Outback Steakhouse, and TGI Friday’s in The Superior Court of the State of California for the County of Los Angeles.
PCRM commissioned an independent laboratory to test grilled chicken products from California outlets of all seven chains. PhIP was found in every grilled chicken sample from each restaurant where samples were collected. PhIP is one of a group of carcinogenic compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCAs) that are found in grilled meat. In 2005, the federal government officially added HCAs to its list of carcinogens, and PhIP has been on the California governor’s list of chemicals known to cause cancer for more than a decade.
“Grilled chicken can cause cancer, and consumers deserve to know that this supposedly healthy product is actually just as bad for them as high-fat fried chicken,” says PCRM president Neal Barnard, M.D. “Even a grilled chicken salad increases the risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer, and other forms of this lethal disease.”
For an interview with lead attorney Dan Kinburn, Dr. Barnard, or another PCRM spokesperson, contact Jeanne S. McVey at 202-686-2210, ext. 316, or jeannem@pcrm.org.
Founded in 1985, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is a nonprofit health organization that promotes preventive medicine, especially good nutrition. PCRM also conducts clinical research studies, opposes unethical human experimentation, and promotes alternatives to animal research.

Love the Planet – Using Recyclable Toilet Paper:
Do you know that virgin forests are cut down every day to make toilet paper for us humans?
Here’s what we can do to stop it.
Toilet Paper Fact:
If every household in the United States replaced just one roll of virgin fiber toilet paper (500 sheets) with 100% recycled ones, we could save 423,900 trees.
