Pregnant moms who live in areas where the drinking water has high levels of chlorine almost double their risk of having babies with birth defects, including heart problems, major brain defects or a cleft palate. The threat to unborn babies is caused by chemical by-products called trihalomethanes, or THMs, which are formed when chlorine is added to water. THMs can be absorbed through the skin and then pass into the womb. Moms can expose their babies to the dangers of chlorine by drinking tap water, bathing, or simply standing close to boiling water. Scientists at the University of Birmingham analyzed the birth records of almost 400,000 babies. They found that anencephalus (partial or complete absence of brain and spinal cord), hole-in-the-heart, and cleft palate increased between 50 and 100 percent in areas where the drinking water was heavily chlorinated to disinfect it. The risk of urinary tract defects and Down’s syndrome was also raised. Earlier studies have linked chlorinated water to other problems, including stillbirth, miscarriage and bladder cancer ( see source). You can obtain more information about polluted drinking water from Drugs in Drinking Water and possible solutions how to prevent diseases, and protect your health. So, how about Your drinking Water – do you like it?

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins Hospital After years of telling people chemotherapy is the only way to try (‘TRY’ being the key word) to eliminate cancer, JOHNS HOPKINS is finally starting to tell you there is an ALTERNATIVE WAY: 1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size. 2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime. 3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells w ill be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors. 4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors. 5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system. 6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc. 7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs. 8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction. 9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications. 10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites. 11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply. CANCER CELLS FEED ON: A. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc. are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg's amines or sea salt. B. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being starved. C. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer. D. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C). E. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified or filtered water , to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it. 12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup. 13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells. 14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Florescence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of dam aged, unwanted, or unneeded cells. 15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life. 16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Daily exercising and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

By Paul Carey, DC, Past President of The World Federation of Chiropractic Eight out of 10 adults will experience disabling back pain at one point in their lives. It is a serious health problem, which often goes untreated ¬and it can often be avoided by giving your back the attention it deserves. One of the reasons back pain is so common is that it can be the result of many different factors such as: • Work-related injuries • Sports injuries • Poor posture and sleeping habits • Stress • Car accidents • Improper lifting Any of these conditions can cause your spine to shift from its normal position or affect your range of motion. This puts pressure on the joints, muscles and nerves in that area, and is what causes most back pain. About 90% of back pain arises from mechanical or functional problems in the spine and related tissues, not bone fracture or pathology. Back Problem Warning Signs Here are some signs and symptoms, which might indicate that you suffer from a back problem and are heading for a disabling back attack: • Difficulty standing up after sitting for any period of time • Stiffness in the morning that decreases when you move around • Inability to turn or bend to each side equally • Unbalanced posture, when your head, neck or shoulder may be higher on one side than the other • Back or leg pain with coughing or sneezing • Leg pain with numbness, tingling and/ or weakness • Developing pain in your hip, buttock, thigh, knee or foot 10 Tips For Keeping Your Back Healthy A healthy back is essential for a healthy body. Here are 10 tips for keeping your back healthy, preventing a back problem in the first place, or preventing first signs from developing into disabling back pain. • Exercise regularly • Follow a healthy diet • Maintain good posture • Stretch your spine before and after sports • Don't overload your backpack or shoulder bag • Stretch your legs and back after each hour of sitting • Never cradle the phone between your neck and shoulder • Lift with care. Balance your body, bend your knees and keep the weight close to your body • Have periodic spinal check-ups • Sleep on your back or side, not on your stomach. And invest in a good pillow and mattress such as the Nikken Sleep System, now endorsed by the World Federation of Chiropractic Preventive care, especially when you notice the early warning signs I have mentioned, is wise and effective. This helps to deal with the daily wear and tear of life before it becomes a "back attack." Many of my patients have a regular tune-up for their back to prevent a second bout of pain and disability - and wish they had done this before their first problem. Are you one of the eight out of 10 adults who have experienced or will experience disabling back pain? Either way, take steps now to keep your back healthy. It's the only back you will have for the rest of your life. Source: Healthy Millionaires, June 2005

Sleeping may seems like an activity so basic, and taken for granted, that you may assume it is pretty much the same no matter what kind of conditions you are in. Despite of extensive research during last fifty years the Science of Sleep still reminds drowsy. The only thing we know for sure: Sleep is an active state that affects both physical and mental well-being. A good night’s sleep can help you cope with stress, solve problems or recover from illness. During deep sleep the body repairs and regenerates tissues, builds bone and muscle and seems to strengthen the immune system. But the luxury of a good night sleep – waking up feeling relaxed, refreshed and ready to take on the day is not that common. Some seventy million people in U.S. admit to having sleep problems. If you are one of them, you may want to read: ‘ What do you know about sleep?’ and find out what are the dangers of poor sleep in numbers besides crankiness and senior moments. You may be surprised! Scientific evidence shows that failure to sleep results not just in fatigue, but also in difficulties with concentration, poor memory, irritability, anxiety, easy frustration and even trouble controlling impulses and emotions plus more stress on top of it. Moreover, lack of sleep actually appears to heighten the risk for variety of major illnesses, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. There is one more important element. The repairing period is essential also because of ever-growing environmental damages. Today’s environment is constantly assaulting our bodies with positive radicals, also known as aging accelerators, which damage our health. But the chemical pollution together with deforestation, electrification and electronics (also known as electronic pollution) have been destroying the Earth’s magnetic field for last two hundred years. As a result of this process the Earth’s magnetic field is up to twelve percent lower than two hundred years ago. The biorhythm of living cells operates optimally against the backdrop of the earth’s natural magnetic field and our bodies did not yet adjust to be able to handle the deficiency of natural magnetic field. Many of us unknowingly suffer from Magnetic Deficiency Syndrome (MDS). The symptoms of MDS include stiffness of the shoulders, back and neck; low back pain; chest pain; habitual headache and heaviness of the head; dizziness and insomnia; habitual constipation and general fatigue for seemingly no specific reason. Our exposure to various negative environmental influences leads gradually to the degradation of our bodies. As the body degrades, it begins to malfunction, what equals to disease. About hundred million people in U.S. are malfunctioning and the main reason is lack of proper sleep. Those who report the following medical conditions are most likely to experience a sleep problem: depression (83%), nighttime heartburn (82%), diabetes (81%), cancer (79%), hypertension (79%), heart disease (78%) and/or arthritis (76%). There is significant number of those who sleep, but not deeply enough to give bodies the health benefits that truly rejuvenating deep sleep provides. “We have to educate Americans that a good night’s sleep is a necessity, not a luxury“, Richard L. Gelula, Executive Director of the National Sleep Foundation. Getting the right amount and quality of sleep may make you healthier and more productive. Good sleep is just as important as good nutrition, exercising, clinically clean air, and life-supporting water. Your health depends on it. Sleep your way to WELLNESS.

Popular misconceptions (Source: National Sleep Foundation) A good deal of what we have heard about sleep and health is the result of myth or misinformation. Some of the prevailing ideas regarding sleep may even be dangerous. Here are some common beliefs about sleep, and the truth behind the stories. Snoring may be an annoyance but it is harmless. This may be true for most people, but sometimes snoring is a symptom of a disorder known as sleep apnea. This condition interrupts breathing during sleep. Sufferers of sleep apnea frequently snore, and in severe cases awaken several times during the night out of breath. Sleep apnea may have serious consequences. Snoring may also be associated with obesity, which can obstruct the airway. Chronic snorers, especially those whose snoring is interrupted, should be examined by their physician to ensure that their nighttime noise is not caused by a potentially life-threatening problem A full night’s sleep is recommended but you can get by on less. Sleeping less than the amount you need not only makes you tired, it can be harmful to your health. Obesity, high blood pressure, depression, lowered productivity and mental alertness, even safety hazards are the consequences of too little sleep. If you get sleepy while driving, you can help stay awake by turning up the radio or opening the window. These tactics can fool you; they may provide a momentary boost to alertness but a tired body soon stops noticing these stimuli, and you’re nodding off again. A more appropriate response to sleepiness while driving is to pull off the road in a protected area and take a nap, for at least 15 minutes. Even that is only a temporary measure. The only safe means of preventing the danger of drowsy driving is prevention: plenty of sleep the night before. Adolescents are grown up enough to sleep the same number of hours that adults do. The teen who gets sleepy in class is not showing signs of laziness or inattention. Sleep experts report that adolescents require more sleep than the average adult — at least 8-1/2 to 9-1/2 hours every night, compared to 7 to 9 hours for a typical 30-year-old. One problem is that teenagers’ biological clocks are close to the adult rhythm, keeping them awake later in the evening and sleeping later in the morning hours. Because many schools begin classes in the early morning, these students may be chronically deficient in the sleep they need. You don’t have insomnia if you don’t have trouble falling asleep. Difficulty falling asleep is but one of four symptoms associated with insomnia. The others include waking up too early and not being able to fall back asleep, frequent awakenings, and waking up feeling unrefreshed. Any of these types of insomnia may be a symptom of a sleep disorder or of another medical problem. Health problems such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and depression are genetic or lifestyle issues, not related to sleep. To the contrary, scientific studies have found a link between sleep and many health problems. For example, insufficient sleep affects the production of growth hormones related to weight maintenance. Cardiovascular problems, the potential for developing diabetes, and other disease states appear to be connected to poor sleep. When you get older, you need less sleep. It is the sleep pattern that seems to change as we get older, not the amount of sleep we need. Older people may wake more frequently through the night, but they tend to take more daytime naps. Sleep is the time for your brain to rest. In fact a great deal of mental activity takes place during certain stages of sleep. There are multiple stages in each 90-minute sleep cycle. Even in the deepest part of each cycle, the brain is processing information or dreaming. Scientists are still not sure why we dream, but it is known that the periods of brain activity serve a vital restorative function. If you wake up in the middle of the night, try to count sheep or use some other way to get back to sleep. If you’ve ever awakened and told yourself you have to get back to sleep, you know how impossible this is. If you’re waiting to fall asleep and it doesn’t happen after about 15 minutes, you may want to get out of bed and find something relaxing to do. This may help you feel sleepy again, and then you can go back to bed. The dangers of poor sleep in numbers: • Average amount that Americans sleep per night on weekdays: 6.9 hours • Average amount that Americans sleep per night on weekends: 7.5 hours • Number of people in the United States affected by a sleep problem: 70 million • Number for whom the problem is chronic and/or frequent: 40 million • Financial losses in the US due to sleep deprivation/disorders: $100 billion per year • Direct healthcare costs of insomnia, including treatment: $14 billion per year • Indirect costs (missed work, property damage, etc.): $28 billion per year • Proportion of Americans who report sleep problems: approximately 70% • Proportion of children who report frequent sleep problems: 69% • Proportion of older adults who report frequent sleep problems: 67% • Number of automobile accidents caused by drowsy drivers: 100,000 per year • Number of fatalities and injuries in these accidents: 72,500 per year • Proportion of Americans who admit to have driven while drowsy: 51% • Proportion who admit to have dozed off while driving: 17% Based on research and surveys conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research, National Institutes of Health, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration You may want to read What is the biological purpose of sleep? and Get More Sleep

On March 16th, CBS NEWS published: The Science of Sleep, the latest findings in sleep research explored by Lesley Stahl. Human beings spend on average one third of their lives asleep. We know we need to sleep but most of us have never really given a whole lot of thought to why. As it turns out no one really knows for sure why, but scientists are discovering that sleep is far more critical to human health than previously believed and have linked sleep deprivation to serious problems such as diabetes and heart disease. Luck of sleep was the subject of a NIH-funded study at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine led by the scientist, David Dinges. “The first finding, and it stunned us, was there is a cumulative impairment that develops in your ability to think fast, to react quickly, to remember things. And it starts right away,” Dinges says. “A single night at four hours or five hours or even six, can in most people, begin to show affects in your attention and your memory and the speed with which you think. A second night it gets worse. A third night worse. Each day adds an additional burden or deficit to your cognitive ability.” More observations Another study at the University of Chicago’s School of Medicine conducted by Eve Van Cauter, an endocrinologist, studies the effect of sleep on the bodies of healthy, young volunteers. “We did a study where we restricted sleep to four hours per night for six nights,” Van Cauter explains. “And we noticed that they were already in a pre-diabetic state. And so, that was a big finding.” The study’s subjects were on the road to diabetes in just six days, and that is not all - they were also hungry. Van Cauter has made a radical discovery: that lack of sleep may be contributing to the epidemic of obesity in this country through the work of a hormone called leptin that tells your brain when you are full. After four nights without deep sleep, the study subjects were hungrier, less alert, and most importantly, their bodies were no longer able to metabolize sugar effectively, putting them temporarily at increased risk for Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Eve Van Cauter together with her colleague Dr. Esra Tasali also experiment with quality of sleep. During a normal night, we cycle through different stages of sleep, progressing from light into deep sleep, then into REM (Rapid eye movement), or dream sleep, and back again. As we age, though, the amount of time we spend in deep sleep decreases. Van Cauter and Tasali are investigating a novel theory that some of the health problems we typically associate with old age may in fact be caused by the loss of deep sleep. “We lose deep sleep at a very early age. So a young, healthy person may have 100 minutes of deep sleep, and at 50 years old it may be as little as 20 minutes. So it really… goes down very quickly,” Van Cauter explains. Other conclusions. As far as goes about the possibility to figure out a way to get along with less sleep, Eve Van Cauter says: “My impression is that sleep affects so many aspects of mental and physical function, that there's not going to be one magic bullet drug that will be able to compensate. Much better idea is simply to sleep an hour more.” The results of these studies show that lack of sleep impacts our appetite, our metabolism, our memory, and also how we age. Years long believe that good diet and exercise are essential for good health may graduate to new level incorporating sleep. Short recap by Lesley Stahl.

I am old enough to remember as a little child the time when people were using DDT like sugar, just everywhere. Only years later some 'experts' started to talk about deteriorating environment and horrifying consequences of toxic pollution. I decided to become environmentalist and obtained master degree in ‘Water technologies and Environment’. After that I was working for years as a researcher designing the treatment systems for the Waste Waters from Chemical Industry. There are countless sources of information about our environment contaminated with the toxic by-products of our technological advances. Just for illustration, National Geographic published in Oct. 2006 an article titled: ‘The chemicals within Us’, which starts: “Thanks to modern chemistry, eggs do not stick to the pan, underarms are fresh all day, SUVs hit 60 in six seconds. But such convenience has a price: Chemicals that suffuse modern life – from well-known toxins to newer compounds with unknown effects – are building up in our bodies and sometimes staying there for years”. As a part of this article you can explore Our toxic homes, a close-up view in the interactive image illustrating different chemicals present in our toxic homes. You will find short description for eight categories of chemicals, some clearly toxic, other only suspected of being harmful. You can read: ‘Pesticides harming more than just the bugs; PCBs long banned, they are still around; Bis-phenols are hormones occurring in water bottles. We cannot run home to escape chemicals that infiltrate our bodies. Our dwellings are rife with them. See for yourself where they are, where they come from and if you can avoid them.’ The consequences are that our toxic homes make us sick! The level of sickness in individual cases may vary from insignificant effects to actual death. The crucial question is: How we can protect ourselves? And the clear reply is: By creating the Cocoon of WELLNESS, a protecting and preventing barrier addressing everyday concerns. It is clear but may not be simple or easy done. Total Wellness, as understood in few last years, includes four main areas: rest & relaxation, fitness, environment and nutrition. By paying appropriate attention to each of these areas, we can actually create a cocoon of wellness, which will support our well-being and sustain quality of our lives for remarkable longer time. Some of you may be even familiar with the possibility of ‘Reverse aging’. I can see Total Wellness as a two-stage process. First stage, I call general awareness, when every individual has to collect enough information needed to make a firm pro-wellness decision and commitment. Second stage, I call physical launching, which actually manifest into the cocoon of wellness, what is on-going process for the rest of the life. Simply said: ‘Discover it and live it every day!’ Some of you may ask: “What should be discovered?” Well, wellness became a very powerful selling word. There are many ‘providers’, who tag their products and/or services with wellness but they do not deliver. Just one example, on Feb. 20th ConsumerAffairs.com published an article: “Ionic Breeze Suit Drives Sharper Image into Bankruptcy” and ‘potentially unhealthy levels of ozone’ were the problem. Somebody told me recently: “There is a jungle out there, how I can know who is saying true and who wants me to sale on something?” The best recommendation in this case (or any other case) is to get knowledge. Knowledge is power and the best thing is that the knowledge in today’s world can be free. My blogs ‘Living Water’, ‘Wellness in Air’, and my Forums in fitness ‘Do not exercise – CardioStride!’, in food ‘Cook with flavor of good health’, in home ‘Wellness Home’, ‘Wellness in Air’, and ‘Your drinking Water – do you like it?’, (more are coming, stay tuned) are offering variety of basic information, which, as pieces of puzzle, can help you to increase your wellness awareness and to make intelligent decision why and how you will protect yourself, your loved ones and anybody else you care for. If resources may seem to be an issue for you, you may want to read the blog Wellness Revolution. Statistically just $1 spent on prevention can avoid the needs of $9 in treatment. Prevention is much more economical and probably only way to go, besides the fact, that to live a healthy life is much more enjoyable then to live a ‘sick’ life. We are indoors 90% of the time and more then 65 percent of that time is spent at home. The air inside your house may be a lot worse than you realize. The US EPA states: “the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities”. Daily exposure to indoor air pollution can be from two to five times higher –sometimes as much as 100 times higher - than outdoor pollutions. Building materials, paneling, carpeting, glues, paint, furniture, personal care products and cleaning agents can emit chemical vapors. Mold, dust mites and mildew may be present. Dust, pet dander, pollen and odors are usually present in indoor air. Gases such as radon and carbon monoxide, heavy metals such as lead are discovered in measurable quantities in many homes. The American Lung Association, concerned with inhalant dangers, estimates that 83% of private homes still contain some lead-based paint. These airborne threats can pose a significant risk to your family’s health. The ones most susceptible to indoor air pollutants are the young, the elderly and the chronically ill, especially those suffering from respiratory and cardiovascular disease. It is imperative to address these issues. A report prepared by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission in cooperation with the U.S. EPA about the dangers of the poor quality of our indoor air specifically mentions air purifiers as an effective measure to address the indoor air pollution problem. Generally, there are three main pollutant categories: particulates, organic gases and inorganic gases, which require three stages of filtration to clean indoor air. First stage is the process of drawing air in with a fan and funneling it through a filter to trap the particles of the pollutants. The second stage is the cleaning process, which attracts the particulates to a surface. The particulates in the air are neutral. Some systems try to use negative ions to charge the particulates and consequently attract them to a positively charged grid, which serves as a magnet. The third stage is the actual destruction of the pollutants, in majority of systems catalytic methods are applied. The reality is that most air purifiers on the market today address only one of these three stages. Moreover, in recent years, some manufacturers added to their products an enhancement by generating negative ions. Ions are charged atoms or molecules. Negative ions are known as eliminators of free radicals, known as aging accelerators (speed up aging process). Negative ions are found in certain natural settings, like forests and near waterfalls. Do you remember that soothing and relaxing feeling which you had last time while you were walking in forest or by a mountain stream? In Japanese language there is a name for this ‘treatment’– shinrinyoku – (translated means forest-air breathing), which is considered to be a therapy for mental stress. Negative ions enhance your sense of well-being and promote relaxation and deep refreshing sleep. Adding negative ion technology to the air filtration system is a great idea but involves a significant challenge. Did you hear about the Sharper Image Bankruptcy? I guess, you did. Ozone is classified by the US EPA as a toxic gas. Recognizing the danger, the state of California has already banned the sale of ozone-producing air filter systems. Other states are expected to follow. Do you have an air filtration system producing negative ions? Studies have shown that most negative ion air purifiers emit ozone, which can create dangerous indoor concentration substantially higher than the US EPA’s safety thresholds for outdoor ozone exposure. However, you do not have to give up on clinically clean and naturally fresh air enhanced by negative ions. The number of asthma-sufferers is increasing dramatically, largely due to a growing sensitization of the pollutants in the air. Breathing in pollutants has a cumulative effect, which over the time, based on specific conditions, will manifest into some kind of ill effects. However, it is a problem, which can be solved through prevention. Purified air is a cornerstone to wellness. You cannot reach and enjoy your wellness if your body is exposed to contaminated air. As we said in beginning, 65% of our time is spent indoor at homes. The majority of the other 35% of time we spend in work/office, in cars, hotel rooms, trains, plains and other places. You may be surprised but I would not address this issue if there were not a solution available. I do not compromise my wellness anywhere I go. My wellness air purifier ‘Traveler’ goes with me. Make sure you get what your body deserves.
