What is Conventional bodhichitta?

Happy Gratitude-Monday!

We return to the classic passage:

“…one Dhar-ma,  Bo-dhi-chit-ta,  embodies all practices
of the development and completion stages...”

Conventional Bodhichitta is all about compassion and love, which are really two sides of the same coin. Compassion is the choice to take-away another’s sufferings {in the most wonderful way}. Love is the decision to lavish another with blessings {in the most wonderful way}.

Why do I keep redundantly repeating the phrase, “
in the most wonderful way”? Because in every religion, on every continent there are only two kinds of teachers:
  • Love-givers
  • and Fear-mongers.
Who could be a great example of a Love-giver: Saint Francis Assisi. On the other hand, who could be a great example of a Fear-monger; Torquemada of the Spanish Inquisition… not one of your more lovable fellows.

Over the centuries the Torquemadas of the world have worked to
convince us that if we take-away another’s sufferings we could be cheating them of the opportunity to “work out their own karma.” Who taught that? Certainly not Avalokiteshvara!

The Torquemadas have also argued that if we are too giving or
even long to be too giving it could harm or “spoil” others. And yet, you’ll never hear Kuan Yin teach that.

Hey, could you remember reading “The Monkey’s Paw” in Junior
High School? In this creepy tail by Edgar Allan Poe, every wish made over a magical amulet came true, but in a consistently, twisted and tragic manner.  Like wise, the Fear-mongers of this world have convinced us that if our compassion or love is unbridled, then only harm can come from it. But guess what kids… Buddha NEVER taught that. And that is why I persist in using the phrase “…in the most wonderful way.

How else could we have been insidiously infected by the
frightening lies of the Torquemadas? We’ll explore that tomorrow.

We are exposed to Fear-inducing lies every day.
Could there be a way to replace those feelings with something much better?

Could there be a way to use one simple exercise to generate:
  • a profound, physical calmness,
  • a dynamic, energetic centeredness
  • and a fun, mental resourcefulness?

Changing How we Feel

Changing How we Feel

Happy Renunciation-Friday!

Has this ever happened to you?

Years ago, I used to come home from work feeling crumby every
day. I felt over worked, under paid and completely unrespected. It felt like I had no job security and nothing in the bank. And so, by the end of the day I was just feeling lousy!

Have you ever come home feeling scattered, confused,
distracted and profoundly unsure of your role in the larger scheme of things? I did, all the time!

And after eating too much food, and watching too much T.V. I’d
often feel weak, exhausted, frightened, neurotic, nervous, annoyed and cranky. Have these feelings ever crept up upon you as well?

Like many folks I explored religion but that just increased the
weight of my guilt and fear.
And, like many others, when I tried
meditation that just increased my sense of inadequacy and frustration.

I didn't want to feel better someday.
I wanted to feel better NOW!

I was so grateful when I met a great Tibetan lama who showed
me how to really change the way I felt in as little as ninety seconds!

You could read more at:

As a Monk I am dependent upon cash donations for food, shelter, and
the founding of San Diego’s first “Buddha of Compassion Meditation Center and Monastery”.

This month only, when you send me a donation, you'll learn how to
“Harness the Power of the Bowing Prayer”  either:
  • in a live telephone lesson {usually $69.96} or
  • from a CD {normally $39.39 plus tax and shipping}.
The live teaching or the CD are my ways of saying “Thank You.” Your donations make my present and future Work Possible.

What is Bodhichitta?

What is Bodhichitta?

Happy Compassion-Thursday!

Again, we read from the passage:

“…one Dhar-ma,  Bo-dhi-chit-ta,  embodies all practices
of the development and completion stages...”

The four syllable word, “Bo-dhi-chit-ta” is more than just a good answer in
Scrabble. It is also a Sanskrit word that could be translated as “the Mind-set of Enlightenment.” But that’s vague, isn’t it? Perhaps we should put a finer point on it?

This is where it gets fun. You see in Buddhism we tend to look at things
from two perspectives, the Conventional and the Ultimate. Is one perspective better then the other? Nope! It’s just like the phrase, “on one hand it’s this way but on the other hand it’s that way.”

I don’t know if you’re like me. But I’m right handed. And you know, if an
angry Ninja ran up to me and whacked off my left arm; I sure would miss it. And by the way, I strongly feel that whacking off peoples limbs is very impolite and should be avoided.

Even though I tend to favor my right hand, I sure am glad I have two. After
all it makes it much easier to eat a ripe, juicy papaya, if you’ve got one hand to hold the fruit and another to work the spoon. Likewise, Buddha taught us to explore reality from both the conventional and the ultimate perspectives.

Well then, what is Conventional Bodhichitta? We’ll explore that on Monday.
Why not tomorrow? Because tomorrow is the big release of February’s instructional CD. It’s a special CD for a reduced price, but only for one month.

If you’ve ever felt an emotion, that you didn’t want to feel;
if you’ve ever wanted to change how you felt, quickly, then you’ll want to read tomorrow’s announcement.

Until then…

What is Dharma?

Happy Interconnection-Wednesday!

When we read Patrul Rinpoche’s, words:

“…one Dhar-ma,  Bo-dhi-chit-ta,  embodies all practices
of the development and completion stages...”

the first question that comes up is, “what is ‘Dhar-ma’?” For most of us,
the first time we heard the word “Dhar-ma” was in that T.V. show a few years ago called “Dharma and Greg.” Could you remember that? I liked it, it was funny.

Like most Sanskrit terms “Dhar-ma” has many meanings. It can mean
“phenomena” as in the phrase “the Enlightened one’s Teachings on the ultimate nature of all phenomena.” Wow, such a mouthful! No wonder it was simply shorted to “Buddha-Dharma” and then to simply “Dharma.”

You’ll notice it does not refer to the conventional truth of all things. Dharma
is not like some encyclopedia-galactica! My friend it won’t tell us how to make a longer lasting light-bulb.

Well then, what it is good for?
Buddha’s teachings are perfect if what we want, if what we really desire is FREEDOM from the tyranny of foolishness, selfishness, confusion, pain, sorrow, fear, anger and turmoil in our lives.

That is the function of
Buddha’s teachings. Not to become a psudo-spiritual Know-it-all, not to become the master of eastern trivia, NOT to swap the culture we were born into for the culture of: Thailand, India, Tibet, Nepal, China, Korea or Japan.

So what is this “Bodhichitta” term?
We’ll explore that Tomorrow.

What are the:
  • verbal,
  • Semi-verbal and
  • silent meditations
that could be perfect for whatever life throws at you?

Bliss and Openness pt. 16

Happy Compassion-Thursday!

Yesterday I did not send out a lesson. Sorry about that my friend; I had my hands full preparing for the February release of my latest instructional CD.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the significance of Atisha’s famous scold, that taught Less is More.

Atisha was a 5th “Bhumi” {
or 5th level} Bodhisattva on Buddha’s 10 level {or Bhumi} path to enlightenment. Getting there was not easy. Many smarter, men and woman worked real hard and accomplished far less. What set Atisha apart from the others? Resource management!

We live in a finite universe. We only have so much Time and only so much Energy! Performing the MANY practices of MANY Buddhas is a great way to squander the remaining time and energy we do have.

Let’s face it folks, foolishly dissipating our time and energy makes about as much sense as masturbating before making-love!

Atisha’s scold is quite generic. It raises many questions such as, “Hey Atisha! If I’m not to dilute my time and energy between the many practices of many Buddhas then would you please fess-up and tell me which practice of which Buddha I should work with?

Tomorrow we’ll explore how many centuries later the Tibetan monk Patrul Rinpoche answered that in a controversial and radical manner.

How could we easily invoke the blessings and guidance of
the Buddha of Compassion in as little as 3 syllables? To find out, go to: http://www.lamajigme.com

Bliss and Openness pt. 15

Many centuries ago, when the great Bengali, Buddhist monk named “Atisha” got to Tibet what did he do? He scolded everyone! This is his most famous quote:

“You foolish Tibetans each perform the practices of a hundred deities
but do not receive a single attainment,
while we Indians perform the practice of just one deity each
and receive the attainments of a hundred.”

So what? How could this teaching of “Less is More” be important? And why could it be really stupid to ignore this sage’s advice? We’ll explore that tomorrow.

So who was this “Atisha”?

Many centuries ago, he was a great Indian monk, whom the Tibetan king begged to come to
Tibet so that he could help with their Buddhist Renaissance.

They invited Atisha several times to come. But he didn’t… until green Tara {
a female Buddha} encouraged him to.

What did he do in
Tibet once he got there? We’ll explore that on Monday.
